The government has come to an agreement with the banned Movement for the Implementation of Mohammad's Sharia Law to end military operations and impose sharia law in the districts of Malakand, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Dir, and Chitral. A similar agreement between the extremists and the government failed in 2008.
The Pakistani government has negotiated an agreement with the Taliban in the war-torn district of Swat to end the fighting in exchange for the implementation of sharia, or Islamic law in a large region of the Northwest Frontier Province.
