LOS ANGELES — A military ordnance found in a backyard was safely detonated by a police bomb squad Monday, authorities said. The device was discovered behind a home in the Sylmar area, said Los Angeles police Officer Karen Smith. After conferring with military authorities, the bomb squad moved the ordnance to an undisclosed location where it was exploded safely, Smith said. Police are investigating how it came to be in the home's backyard, Smith said.
